We’re meeting with the Chairman on June 12th. And I think it’s probably going to be a very successful — ultimately, a successful process. We’ll see.

The President stated that the meeting was supposed to be a brief meeting for the purpose of Vice Chairman Kim Yong Chol to present a letter from Kim Jong-un to President Trump. But according to the President it ended up being a two-hour meeting. When asked why, the President stated “[b]ecause we found the whole subject matter very interesting. And because I really think they want to do something. And if it’s possible, so do we.” Although the President had a conciliatory tone in discussing the negotiations with North Korea, he was unwilling to commit to any timetable or changes in U.S. sanctions against the country.

What About That Letter?

At one point the President said that the letter was very nice and playfully taunted the press on the South Lawn about its contents. Then later stated that he “purposely had not opened it” in front of the Vice Chairman. The President joked that he may be in for a big surprise when he does in fact open the letter.

Let’s hope not.
