IAEA Chief Says Iran in Compliance With JCPOA
Iran is implementing its nuclear-related commitments…
Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated in two separate appearances today, once before the IAEA Board of Governors and the second at a press conference, that Iran is in compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and that the IAEA inspectors had access to all of the sites and locations they needed to visit.
The IAEA now has the world’s most robust verification regime in place in Iran. We have had access to all the locations that we needed to visit.
Meanwhile, at the White House…
The IAEA chief’s statements fly in the face of ongoing claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, as recently as today during a joint press conference at the White House. Netanyahu used today’s press opportunity to, once again, vilify the Islamic Republic (that Israel used to sell arms to). In his statements, PM Netanyahu claimed that Iran has not given up its nuclear ambitions and accused Iran of “practicing aggression everywhere.” Netanyahu insisted “Iran must be stopped.”
The JCPOA
The JCPOA is a deal reached by Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union. At the time the United States, under then President Barack Obama, was saber-rattling against Iran. However, the JCPOA came to fruition shortly after Iran successfully hacked a U.S. spy drone. The agreement sets out rigorous mechanisms for monitoring limits on Iran’s nuclear program, while paving the way for lifting UN sanctions against the country.
One thing that continues to go unmentioned regarding Iran is that United States, the United Kingdom, Russia and France have all interfered with Iran’s sovereign right to self-determination by violating it’s territorial and political sovereignty at some point in the last century. They also all possess nuclear weapons.
