Trump Tweets US Presence in Middle East ‘mistake in lives and dollars’.

The “Mess” in the Middle East

The day after Thanksgiving, President Donald Trump took to his personal Twitter account and posted the following tweet:

The tweet comes on the heals of face-to-face meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Sochi, Russia and their joint statement signaling cooperation of the three countries to broker a peaceful settlement in Syria. The open cooperation by these three regional players on a such a significant matter as the Syrian crisis without even inviting the United States to the party signals a growing isolation of the United States on the international scene.

Russia, Iran and Turkey have been strengthening their ties in recent months, even openly discussing bilateral trade outside of the petrodollar. Turkey and Iran actually formalized such an arrangement in October. Turkey, a member of NATO, also recently inked a deal with Russia for the purchase of a their S-400 missile defense.

Rare Moment of Candor or Policy Shift?

Despite efforts by the mainstream media to demonize these countries, many people across the globe see the connection between the increased willingness of countries to exclude the United States with unchecked American aggression across the globe in the twenty-first century. Once the undisputed ‘leader of the free world’, the United States is now more viewed as an entrenched, oppressive global hegemon that is the greatest threat to global peace.

Was Trump’s tweet just a rare moment of presidential candor on America’s destructive presence in the Middle East or does it signal a real shift to come in U.S. policy in the region?
