YouTube Deletes Alternative Media Channel Without Warning
A couple of weeks ago, alternative media outlet, Activist Post, reported that their ‘unblemished’ YouTube Channel was terminated without warning in early October. As of this posting, their channel still displays the ominous message highlighted in bright red, “This account has been terminated due to multiple or severe violations of YouTube’s policy against spam, deceptive practices, and misleading content or other Terms of Service violations.”
Activist Post goes on to explain why their channel was unblemished and that they were completely surprised by the termination because they were in perfect standing with YouTube. They were in the YouTube Partners Program with most of their content classified as ad-friendly and they had not a single complaint or strike against their account. But Activist Post’s appeal to restore the channel was met with a cold, faceless denial message from YouTube.
The Merger of Corporate and State Power
In the Information Age, Internet giants like Google (YouTube’s parent company), Facebook and Twitter wield immense power over the information people receive. In the wake of the upset victory of reality TV personality, Donald Trump, over long-time beltway fixture, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, these gatekeepers of information have moved to censor non-mainstream media outlets’ use of their platforms and are openly moving closer in relationship with government.
Armed with the often-debunked Russian hacking and “fake news” narratives peddled by the dying mainstream press, these Internet giants have been merging their power with government actors to suppress voices that challenge the status quo. But the termination of Activist Post’s channel without any warning, explanation or even a previous complaint has to be the one of the most blatant examples of Internet censorship yet.
There is a quote attributed to twentieth century poster-child for fascism, Benito Mussolini, that says “the definition of fascism is the marriage of corporation and state.” While it is disputed whether Mussolini actually ever said this, YouTube/Google wielding their hammer to stifle Activist Post makes it ever-apparent that this statement is coming true in the twenty-first century. The silver lining is that this type of suppression also provides an opportunity for more open platforms like BitChute to expand their market share.
